Although software and AI are playing an increasingly important role in medical technology, there is often great uncertainty regarding whether and how software and AI can be patented. This lecture will provide clarity. Using example patents, it will be demonstrated in a practical manner, understandable even for someone without expertise in patents, how software and AI innovations in medical technology can be protected by patents. By the end of the lecture, participants will be better able to assess whether their software or AI invention is patentable or not.

As a patent attorney and engineer, Christian Metzger supports medical technology companies in building a patent portfolio that protects their innovations from imitation and thus promotes corporate success. This is particularly the case where medical technology meets software and digitalization, and digital machines are created.

He can draw on his broad technological and industrial experience, which he also gained in his years as a development engineer and – before that – as a business consultant at McKinsey & Company.
